Henry Frederick Lucas Lucas, born in Louth, Lincolnshire, England before settling in Rugby at age thirty, devoted his long life to painting equestrian sports. His style combined elements of earlier realistic artists as well as modern artistic elements such as informal brushwork. He painted primarily polo, racing and fox hunting scenes, including his famed commission from the Pytchley Hunt of Northamptonshire. His longevity and prodigious career spanning the 19th and 20th centuries have created a pictorial record documenting social changes and embodying artistic shifts from formal hunting portraits to more relaxed compositions in his later years.
