Condition: Fine condition, very minor in-painting to sky of one painting. Both period frames, one original. (see full condition report).
Born in Copenhagen, Denmark, Antonio Jacobsen became one of America’s best known and most prolific painters of marine subjects. Having attended the Royal Academy of Design. He emigrated to New York in 1871 and began painting, creating about 6000 ship portraits in the New York Harbor between 1876 and 1919.
It is quite rare to find pairs of paitnings especially ones of historical importance. The engagement of the Constitution and Guerriere during the War of 1812 was a turning point in the war and significant to American history. Works on canvas by Jacobsen are also not as commonly seen.
Provenance: Recently acquired and sold directlyfrom the original owners.
