Federal Inlaid Sideboard

Probably New York, ca. 1795-1810
Mahogany, mahogany veneer, various woods for inlay, poplar and pine secondary woods
Condition: See condition report below.
The form of this sideboard is typically found in New York. The serpentine front single board mahogany top conforms to the center of the case which has two drawers above two doors which are inset. The ovolo sides are also inset with a drawer above a door. The case is supported by tapered legs with inlaid bell flowers and cuffs below inlaid oval panels of flowers. The entire case is adorned with figured mahogany veneer, quarter fan inlay patterns surrounded by banding and line inlay.
Provenance: From the Collection of Helen and Herman Cooper
Condition Report: The top is one piece of mahogany. There is a triangular patch on the left side possibly due to a large shrinkage crack. Both sides of the case have had shrinkage cracks filled with strips of wood. There is restoration to the hinged area on the lower left side door where it meets the leg. Minor areas of veneer banding along the top and around the drawer face panels restored, most of which have been re-glued and only a few replaced. One section, 2 ½” long, of inlay on the lower edge of the case, on the right side is restored. Brasses and center lock are original, locks on the doors are replaced. Refinished.
